It is no secret that an extraction or root extract can be painful. But did you know that there are things you can do to avoid some of the pain? Here are some tips for reducing pain after tooth extraction.

If you ever had a tooth extracted, then you understand how excruciatingly painful it could be. To help with this post, there are several things that you can do to manage your pain for managing and minimizing your discomfort after this process.

It is important to remember that these tips are not a substitute for professional medical treatment. Always follow your dentist’s guidelines and best judgment after the extraction process. That being said, if you follow these tips, you should have minimal discomfort after tooth extraction.

Firstly, you will want to leave the area of the extraction site as soon as possible after the process is over. While it is painful, allowing that area to settle and heal can be beneficial for better recovery. You should also use a cold pack on and around the extraction site immediately after it has been done. This helps reduce swelling and pain associated with hot/cold temperatures. Ice packs may also help but they will not minimize swelling or pain as much as water-based cold packs do.

Secondly, to help with the pain, you may want to take some ibuprofen or acetaminophen. It is best if you take your medicine prior to the extraction so that it does not interfere with the local anesthetic used during the process. After taking your medicine and a cold shower, you will want to get comfortable and rest. This is a very important part of reducing pain after tooth extraction. After resting, it is recommended that you eat foods such as yogurt because of its high protein content and Vitamin B12 which helps reduce inflammation after the process is complete.

Thirdly, avoid smoking and alcohol as much as possible because these substances will increase your oral inflammation when combined with oral surgical procedures such as tooth extraction.

Fourth, it is also important to drink a lot of water to help your mouth heal and prevent infection. While it is difficult during the process to remember to drink water, I recommend that you fill up a water bottle located nearby and sip on it all day.

Lastly, it is very important that you visit your dentist for a follow-up appointment. Having your extraction site checked and properly cared for after the process is complete will help expedite the healing process.

With these tips, you should be well on your way to reducing pain after tooth extraction. However, the pain is still inevitable with these procedures. Consult with your dentist about any other questions or concerns you may have about tooth extraction. In the end, by following these tips and doing what you can to ensure proper recovery, you can experience reduced pain after tooth extraction.
